Covered bridge to stay closed for $57K repairs

NEWTON FALLS — A young doughnut-shop delivery driver from Canton, unfamiliar with his vehicle and Newton Falls, drove the box truck through the historic Newton Falls Covered Bridge on July 10, damaging trusses and beams all through the structure.

The repairs, which will cost his employer’s insurance company around $57,000, will keep the bridge closed until sometime in January, said David Rouan, spokesman for the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office, which is responsible for the bridge.

Meanwhile, Trumbull County commissioners have approved a reduction in the legal weight limit of the bridge from 12 tons to three tons to try to prevent trucks from using the bridge, Rouan said.

Work trucks of any kind were already prohibited from the bridge, and there is a sign that warns trucks to stay out, but Ryan M. Vallen, 22, of Canton, apparently didn’t realize that when he drove a box truck through the bridge at 2:30 a.m. July 10, Rouan said.

Library showcases covered bridge artifacts

NEWTON FALLS — With the recent opening of the Newton Falls covered bridge, a special display of covered bridge items and models are being shown at the public library’s history room.

The original covered bridge was erected in the 1831 with many parts and pieces of the bridge including dowels, nails, sides and trusses being showcased. There are also photos and pictures of the bridge.

Assistant library director Carol Baker said the covered bridge artifacts can be viewed along with historical pictures and paintings of the bridge.

Baker said resident George W. Quiggle created several miniatures of the bridge including those that Quiggle measured to exact scale.

Our million dollar bridge is almost done!

Old Newton Falls Covered Bridge: 117' Long Built in 1831According to an article in the Trib, our beloved covered bridge is nearing completion and there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday at 2pm.

I've ranted about this before. Remembering history is important. I'm fond of the Newton Falls landmark. But at a cost of $900,000? C'mon people.

Yes, it was paid by a federal grant, and maybe if we didn't spend it someone else would have. But I still can't fathom funding a project that cost that much for a 100' of bridge over a river no one travels on.

Covered Bridge worth nearly a million dollars?

This article from the Vindicator covered a story about The Righter Co. of Columbus to finish work originally started on the Newton Falls Covered Bridge by another company, BECDIR.

Trumbull County Commissioners awarded a contract for $985,000 to the Righter Co. to finish the job that was supposed to be finished a year ago.

Wow....that just seems like a ton of money. Imagine if the commissioners spent a mil on the school?
