Dumb As DillonNEWTON FALLS — The FBI came down pretty quickly on Roger Lee Dillon of Youngstown who is accused of stealing $7.4 million from a Liberty armored car service in November.
One local recording studio owner said the rapid capture might have killed Dillon’s chances of becoming a folk hero, but at least some children can have a better Christmas because of it.
“This is a country song if I ever heard one,” said Mike Talanca of Tune Town recording in Newton Falls.
Talanca and his friends Alan Matavich and Brenda Rider penned the ballad “Dumb as Dillon,” which immortalizes Dillon’s misadventures. The song is getting airplay on a local radio station and is available on CD for a $5 donation to Toys for Tots and A Way With Words Foundation, which is an organization for children cancer survivors.
Within days of naming Dillon, 22, Nicole Boyd, 24, and his mother, Sarah Lee Gregory, 48, as people of interest in the case, law enforcement tracked him to a trailer in Pipestem, W.Va., where they captured the group and found the money.
In the song, which Talanca sings with a country twang, he asks “Would you be dumb as Dillon?” Matavich’s lyrics go through the heist, which “went off like clockwork,” to the suspects leaving receipts in a pickup truck which lead officers to Pipestem, where the suspects were hiding out “in mama’s double-wide.”
“I’m so glad something good could come out of this guy’s misfortune,” Talanca said.
Rider shopped the track out to local radio stations, and Talanca said he’s happy it’s getting airplay.
“I’m just surprised it got as popular as it did,” he said.
According to a news release, the song is available for a $5 donation to the foundation. For more information, the release states people can can call 330-360-3300 or visit www.awaywithwordsfoundation.com.
